The Chilalo Graphite Project is high-grade and situated in the southeast corner of the Tanzanian border, approximately 240 km northwest of the coastal port city of Mtwara.

Over the current 19-year life of the mine, the Chilalo Project aims to produce 52,000 tpa of graphite concentrate. The Project is underpinned by a high-grade Ore Reserve of 8.0 Mt ore at 10.5% total graphitic carbon. Exploration has highlighted the potential for growth in the Ore Reserve, an extension of mine life, and an expansion of the processing plant.

SUMMARY
Commencing in 2019, Dhamana began providing environmental permitting advice, reviewing various environmental reports and documents, managing additional environmental and social studies, and developing the environmental and social management system for the Project.
Dhamana led the team responsible for undertaking key environmental and social studies required to optimise the Project layout and then compiled an updated environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) to reflect the latest mine layout and design. The updated ESIA was compiled in compliance with good international industry practice, specifically the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards and Equator Principles. Dhamana has also worked closely with in-country consultants to develop an update to the original approved ESIA for submission to the National Environmental Management Council for approval and to conduct an ESIA for the proposed resettlement site for the Project. The resettlement site ESIA was also developed in compliance with the IFC Performance Standards, lender requirements, and good international industry practices.

Dhamana has led the updating of the resettlement action plan (RAP) to ensure compliance with IFC Performance Standards and Tanzanian legal requirements and has supported the in-country team with its initial implementation.

Evolution, with the assistance of Dhamana, is developing an environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Prioritisation of SDGs has been achieved through developing a materiality matrix in consultation with key stakeholders to rank material topics. Business goals and targets were then set for identified material goals. Monitoring against set targets is underway and will underpin future sustainability reporting.
